This rupture is caused by the 'still-present' memories of institutional trauma, and the effect that has on the writing of histories of psychiatry. Such trauma also shapes the everyday practice of social work. Institutional trauma in the case of social work might refer to forms of interaction with the institutions of welfare, law, medicine, education, and religion, that can render clients powerless. Dynamics of privacy, power, and control that characterise these institutional settings can create climates conducive to manipulation and maltreatment that is more severe, more frequent and more likely to occur over longer periods of time, all factors known to be associated with pervasive adverse impacts and outcomes for survivors. The lived realities of institutional abuse means that impacts can extend to families, loved ones, and the wider community-constituting intergenerational and shared or collective trauma. The focus of our reflection is on how we might build a methodology around researching traumatic memory in practice, and in the present. This work would start to work towards what editor of this Special Issue Elizabeth Roberts-Pedersen argues is a key element of contemporary trauma studies: theorising the relationship between theory and practice, both within and across disciplines.]]> Thu 25 Jul 2019 09:20:33 AEST ]]> Coda - speaking madness: word, image, action https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:41000 Thu 21 Jul 2022 10:30:15 AEST ]]> Institutional records: a comment https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:39266 Thu 02 Jun 2022 11:49:24 AEST ]]> White men and weak masculinity: men in the public asylums in Victoria, Australia, and New Zealand, 1860s–1900s https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:31782 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:44:15 AEDT ]]> Insanity and ethnicity in New Zealand: Māori encounters with the Auckland Mental Hospital, 1860-1900 https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:31784 mate Māori, and the sad outcomes for Māori.]]> Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:44:15 AEDT ]]> Insanity, identity and empire: immigrants and institutional confinement in Australian and New Zealand, 1873-1910 https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:31462 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:43:49 AEDT ]]> Regulating ‘mobility’ and masculinity through institutions in colonial Victoria, 1870s-1890s https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:31786 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:42:51 AEDT ]]> Introduction: New Zealand's empire https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:29697 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:38:49 AEDT ]]> Law's mobility: vagrancy and imperial legality in the trans-Tasman colonial world, 1860s-1914 https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:29696 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:38:48 AEDT ]]> Caring for a man who sexually abused children https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:29711 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:33:26 AEDT ]]> The rise and fall of National Women's Hospital: a history (book review) https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:23185 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:10:30 AEDT ]]> Psychiatry, mental institutions, and the mad in apartheid South Africa https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:23186 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:10:29 AEDT ]]> Healthy communities: history in public https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:34262 Mon 25 Feb 2019 11:39:09 AEDT ]]> Vagrancy, Mobility and Colonialism https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:49581 Mon 22 May 2023 11:33:07 AEST ]]> Letters to Lizzie: Archival practice and the entangled worlds of Charlie Fraser https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:42350 Mon 22 Aug 2022 13:54:25 AEST ]]> Consorting with 'others': Vagrancy laws and unauthorised mobility across colonial borders in New Zealand from 1877 to 1900 https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:41611 Mon 08 Aug 2022 14:01:19 AEST ]]> From the margins: madness and history in Australia https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:49144 Fri 05 May 2023 12:07:50 AEST ]]> Co-producing madness: international perspectives on the public histories of mental illness https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:49112 Fri 05 May 2023 11:39:18 AEST ]]>
