Just over two-fifths were working in small animal practice only. Around three quarters (75.3%) reported suffering at least one NSI in the previous 12 months, while 58.9% reported suffering from at least one contaminated NSI during the previous 12 months, which crudely extrapolates to an exposure rate of 75.3 and 58.9 NSI per 100 person-years respectively. Risk factors for contaminated NSI were female gender, working in small or mixed animal practice, being less experienced, seeing more patients per week and working longer hours per week. The most common causative devices were syringes (63.7%), suture needles (50.6%) and scalpel blades (34.8%). Conclusion: The exposure rate of NSI is high for Queensland veterinarians and clearly remains a major occupational health problem. Current guidelines and strategies to reduce NSI in veterinary practice should be promoted, but appear to be adapted from human health care. Studies to understand why veterinarians have such high NSI rates are required to not only identify risk factors for NSI, but also to determine attitudes and beliefs about NSI. From these studies specific strategies for veterinarians can be designed and trialed to develop evidence-based guidelines and policies that are effective in decreasing the exposure rate of NSI in veterinary practice.]]> Wed 11 Apr 2018 11:37:24 AEST ]]> Prevalence and correlates of low back pain among occupational therapy students in Northern Queensland /manager/Repository/uon:4567 Wed 11 Apr 2018 10:36:33 AEST ]]> The hidden tragedy of rivers: a decade of unintentional fatal drowning in Australia /manager/Repository/uon:29151 Wed 11 Apr 2018 10:18:34 AEST ]]> Examining the dimensions and correlates of workplace stress among Australian veterinarians /manager/Repository/uon:7475 Wed 11 Apr 2018 09:41:40 AEST ]]> Alcohol-related absenteeism: the need to analyse consumption patterns in order to target screening and brief interventions in the workplace (editorial) /manager/Repository/uon:6929 Sat 24 Mar 2018 10:47:24 AEDT ]]> Estimation of some missing bibliometric indicators at Industrial Health (letter) /manager/Repository/uon:6924 Sat 24 Mar 2018 10:47:24 AEDT ]]> Hand dermatitis among veterinarians from Queensland, Australia /manager/Repository/uon:7670 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:39:25 AEDT ]]> Surgical applications of methyl methacrylate: a review of toxicity /manager/Repository/uon:7501 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:38:33 AEDT ]]> Obituary: Eric Clifford Wigglesworth AM: 21 May 1926 - 22 March 2009 /manager/Repository/uon:7521 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:38:31 AEDT ]]> Impact factors and the Journal of Travel Medicine (letter) /manager/Repository/uon:7537 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:37:43 AEDT ]]> Workplace hazards among Australian dental students (letter) /manager/Repository/uon:7534 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:37:42 AEDT ]]> Celebrating volume ten of the Annals, part 1: historical development and content analysis, 1995-2009 /manager/Repository/uon:7666 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:36:01 AEDT ]]> Towards greater international exposure for the Annals of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine (editorial) /manager/Repository/uon:5028 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:44:09 AEDT ]]> International travelers and unintentional fatal drowning in Australia-a 10 year review 2002-12 /manager/Repository/uon:29141 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:32:34 AEDT ]]> Ten citation classics from the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health (editorial) /manager/Repository/uon:4778 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:20:45 AEDT ]]> Special issues in the Annals of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine (editorial) /manager/Repository/uon:4783 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:20:44 AEDT ]]> Impact factors and the Journal of Travel Medicine (editorial) /manager/Repository/uon:4790 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:20:40 AEDT ]]> Assessing the bibliometric performance of a 'Special Issue': A citation analysis using the Web of Science database /manager/Repository/uon:23750 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:11:09 AEDT ]]>
