- This paper provides continuously monitored data for rainfall, groundwater levels and quality, and water level in selected infiltration trenches within an existing 40 year old residential subdivision (Subdivision 1) draining to a new subdivision (Subdivision 2) in coastal NSW. Due to inundation issues downstream of the residential area, the traditional drainage pits and pipes were removed and replaced with infiltration trenches throughout Subdivision 1. Results from this study show that the use of infiltration trenches in Subdivision 1 resulted in a 77 % reduction in peak discharge (m³/s) and a 98 % reduction in stormwater volumes (m³) (to Subdivision 2) for a rainfall event that exceeded a 1 in 50 year recurrence interval. Comparative performance was determined by simulating the pre-existing approach (drains and pipes) and comparing results with continuous measurement of water levels at critical points within the infiltration trench system between 26/8/08 – 28/2/09. Results indicate that over a range of monitored rainfall events the volume of stormwater discharging to Subdivision 2 was negligible and, for the one rain day that did produce discharge, the performance of the infiltration trenches significantly exceeded the performance of the pre-existing stormwater drainage approach (pits and pipes). Rainfall recurrence intervals during the monitoring period ranged from less than 2 years to greater than 50 years.
