- Description
- In this paper the introduction of sustainability concepts into the undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum is explored. Firstly, a brief review of the literature is presented, highlighting the broadening role of chemical engineers in addressing societal challenges. Focus is placed on the different education approaches and resource material available used in preparing what Clift (1998) describes the New Model Engineer. The review highlighted the diversity of approaches used to increase sustainability awareness, while at the same time identified that more practical illustrations are needed to engage students, particularly in the early years of their study. For this reason, a simple carrying capacity example is presented, which is meant to be introduced to first year chemical engineering students to illustrate the connection between population, environment, and technology. The concepts are simple and quickly introduce students to material and energy balances, unit conversion and modelling analysis in a way that includes the potential positive influences of technology through reduction in energy usage and carbon dioxide abatement. More generally, the example provides an experience in applying the CONSIDER, CALCULATE and COMMUNICATE approach which seems appropriate when addressing sustainability-related issues. Finally, general comments are made on how to further stimulate student interest in sustainability using pinch technology.
