- The New South Wales (NSW) Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Commission, known as TAFE NSW, is delivering Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses by Interactive Distance eLeaming (IDL) to both Indigenous students in remote communities in NSW and parents and staff at isolated homesteads. The adults in isolated homesteads who access VET offered by TAFE utilised the equipment provided to the children in the homestead who are students of a 'School of the Air' or a school of distance education. IDL is catering for inequities in rural education due to geographical isolation by providing VET to isolated homesteads and remote communities. TAFE offers a range of entry level courses, with the subject and scope of the courses are often designed in consultation with students to provide VET relative to the needs and employment opportunities of the communities. Based on some of the emerging fmdings from an Australian Research Council Linkage project - Interactive Distance eLearning for Isolated Communities: 'Opening Our Eyes', the paper examines VET delivery in NSW via IDL, in particular, the challenges and benefits of teaching VET via IDL as perceived by teachers, both new and experienced.
