- This chapter provides information on the nursing care and management of clients who have a dual disability that is, a diagnosis of a mental illness comorbid with an intellectual disability - in the context of mental health services. To assist readers who have little first-hand experience with people with an intellectual disability, a number of case studies are included. Essentially, quality mental health nursing care for clients with an intellectual disability is the same type of care offered to any other member of the community, with some important differences. It might be necessary for the mental health nurse to modify the way in which she or he communicates with the client, in order to accommodate a level of understanding appropriate to the client's disability. A modification of the assessment process may provide the nurse with information vital to the management of the client. The process of forming a therapeutic alliance with the client will be greatly enhanced by promoting a cooperative relationship between the relevant mental health professionals and the client's usual carers and/or service providers. The client should be supported upon discharge from mental health services via the design and implementation of a mental health support plan.
