- Description
- In this foreword, my intention to a large extent is to supplement discussions and analyses that are developed in the various research articles in this volume. To fill, as it were, some of the small gaps that must appear when each article is so highly specialised and focused. While the two pillars of Australian identity may appear to the rest of the world to be patriotic sport and war, the culture itself reflected in its more contemporary feature film is much deeper, diverse and more complex and ambiguous than that. This book is all about how Australians for the last one hundred years or so have used feature films to tell a comprehensive range of stories about themselves - some close to the bone in social realism and others more intent on myth-making. In this collection, the fluctuating fortunes - the boom and bust - of the Australian film industry through several passionate, but at times brief flowerings are given regard.
