- Description
- This chapter explores the social patterning of health and illness at a global level. The most severe health inequalities that exist today exist between counmes not within them, and so much so, that your chances of illness, disability, and premature death vary greatly depending upon your country of residence. In developed countries, average life expectancy at birth is around 80 years compared to 45 years in sub-Saharan Africa (UNDP 2005). Infectious diseases that are treatable and preventable plague the poorest nations, but not the wealthiest ones. Such different life chances are avoidable and inequitable.
