- Description
- Patient education is an integral component of effective asthma management that is necessary for all age groups. It can be viewed as a two-staged process, which involves not only the acquisition of knowledge, but also the integration of skills and attitudes that leads to a change in behaviour. Effectively this is asthma self management education (SME). People with asthma often have poor asthma knowledge and management skills. Effective self-management education can improve asthma knowledge and skills and reduce asthma exacerbations. This chapter summarizes the evidence in support of asthma education, reviews the components of successful education models and provides practical tools and recommendations for delivering effective asthma education. Particular attention is paid to the formation of effective patient-clinician partnerships, the transfer of asthma knowledge and skills, self monitoring and written asthma action plans.
