- Description
- The papers in this theme issue arise from a symposium on Home/Neighbourhood/City+ held at the University of Tasmania in December 2007. Taking home, neighbourhood, and city as starting points rather than fixed categories, the purpose of the symposium was to encourage critical reflections on processes of urban social life that ebb and flow across these scales, rather than being bounded within such predefined scales. The embeddedness of these multiscalar processes in lived experience across a diversity of contexts was also a focus. These themes were inspired by current developments in both theory and policy. Theoretically, we were interested in relational geographies of urban social life that emphasise the networked nature of social life, places, and scales. In policy terms, we were intrigued by the struggle of some urban policies with, and deployment of, scale and complexity, and, in particular, the vexed issue of how to successfully implement urban policy that rests upon recognition of the multiscalar nature of city life. The papers engage, in different ways, with the multi-dimensionality and networked and scalar aspects of urban life and urban policy. More specifically, they collectively aid a project of unsettling these taken-for-granted notions of home/neighbourhood/city and their intersections. In this editorial we sketch some of what we see as the key theoretical and policy antecedents of these papers and the ways that they take these concerns forward. We begin with a discussion of relational conceptions of scale and place as they pertain to home, neighbourhood, and city, and then move to questions of policy and scale, before ending with an outline of the papers themselves.
