- Description
- This chapter aims to show the role of regular class teachers in preparing students for post-school life, demonstrate ways in which teachers can assist students with additional needs to successfully transition from school and show the importance of integrating school programs with work experience and vocational education and training. Regardless of the level of education, all teachers are part of the process of preparing students for post-school life. Even in infant grades, teachers are attempting to establish skills such as the ability to interact appropriately with others, basic independence in a range of life activities, and basic academics, which will allow students to continue to develop throughout their school careers and in later life. Understandably, at this early level it is difficult to predict exactly what academic skills students will need to be successful when they leave school. Given the rate of change in areas such as bio-technology and information and communication technology, predicting exactly what skills students will need in 10 years time is challenging because these skills are likely to change significantly in the next decade.
