- The methods of skull-face superimposition and facial approximation have a proven track record in assisting casework success and are thus indispensable tools for aiding in the identification of human skeletal remains. Skull-face superimposition is particularly useful for excluding individuals to whom the skeletal remains do not belong, however, with two or more different facial views and anterior dentition comparison evidence of a match can be strong. Facial approximation is a more inaccurate and unreliable method but continues to hold an important role, which is especially pronounced when other identification methods cannot be used. With increased research and empirical testing both methods of craniofacial identification may come to carry more weight in skeletal remains investigations of the future.
