- Description
- The focus of this chapter is on the woman within her birth territory. It considers the ordinary changes that women undertake to actualize their potential power to give birth in unique and personally meaningful ways. This chapter also acknowledges that the spiritual ramifications of childbirth extend way beyond the birth room (Gaskin 1990). Based on research exploring the intimate and often ordinary changes that women experience during pregnancy and birth, the chapter considers the ordinary practices of life that encircle childbirth as a peak spiritual experience (Parratt 2008). I call these practices 'spiritual practices'. The chapter is in three parts. The first part briefly considers current practices surrounding childbirth change. Part two outlines background concepts to the theory. The final part offers a portion of the theory called 'Territories of the Self' developed from PhD research where 14 women were interviewed in their first pregnancies (Parratt 2008).
