- There was a revolution in the London playhouses in the late 1580s and early 1590s, and central to it were the early performances of Marlowe's plays. The key to understanding that revolution lies less in what we notice when we read the play texts-the "mighty line," the notorious and notable characters, the subversive possibilities of the ideas-than in what the early audiences noticed when they saw and attempted to make sense of the action on stage. Marlowe's real innovation-his real subversion, if you will-was the empowering of his contemporary audience. This essay will focus on how this happened at the early performances of Edward II.
