- Structural steel is widely used for critical infrastructure, such as offshore structures, ships, marine pipelines, coastal and harbour facilities, bridges, storage tanks, pipelines and conveyor systems. Protective coatings or cathodic protection, while often used, are not always effective and corrosion may threaten safety and performance through loss of material or through perforation by pitting. Recently developed quantitative models for marine immersion based on corrosion fundamentals including the effect of microbiological influences are described. These are useful for prediction of corrosion loss and for maximum pit depth. They can include the influence of various environmental and material composition factors and salinity levels. The models have been calibrated to in-situ data from a wide variety of sources, including ships, and are being extended to tidal, atmospheric and inland corrosion environments. It is shown that traditional extreme value analyses for maximum pit depth are not appropriate as the difference between meta-stable and stable pitting was not considered. A recent new interpretation is reviewed.
