- Description
- Given the role of services trade in economic growth, employment, and value added, the key objective of this seminar paper will be to draw attention towards trends, challenges, and opportunities confronted by ASEAN members. The paper will trace the structural transformation of the ASEAN economies by examining the role of services in value added, trade, and employment during 1996-2004. The ASEAN services export structure underpins the members' relative specialisation based upon given resources, activities, and strategies. The issue of ASEAN export competitiveness in services will be tackled by computing Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) indices for transport, travel, insurance and financial services. Among other factors, trade in services depend upon the height of market access barriers, targeted under GATS and AFTA. The paper will analyse the ASEAN scorecard in terms of the members' commitments to liberalise trade in services. A conducive domestic, regional, and global trading environment is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for services firms to participate in international trade. The paper will highlight a number of industry, firm, and mode-specific factors that may underpin decisions at the firm ievel to engage in services trade.
