- Jameson's work embodies a tension at the heart of contemporary literary criticism and theory - namely, between what has been called the ban on master narratives and the continued existence of those narratives as such. What we find, on the one hand, are the suspicions of poststructuralists and postcolonial critics against any totalizing theory and, on the other, the construction of ever more totalizing theories in the work of writers such as Slavoj Žižek, Michael Hardt, and Antonio Negri. Politically and economically, the tension takes the form of a rampant globalization over a host of regionalisms and cultural specificities. That globalization may be the oft-derided and yet feared global dominance of the United States, or the acephalous "empire" of Negri' and Hardt's argument, whereas a scale of regionalisms, from Quebec and Scotland to the Asian region, seems both to oppose such globalization and yet feed off it. In other words, apart from an interest that we might have in the particular content of Jameson's writing and the positions he espouses, his work also has a bearing on these tensions or contradictions in literary and cultural criticism, politics, and economics.
