- Wide spaced reinforced masonry is a single leaf walling system used widely in the tropical regions of Australia as it possesses effective resistance to out of plane cyclonic wind loading. Its in-plane shear behaviour is less well understood, leading to prescriptive design provisions in AS3700, the Australian Masonry Structures Code. A review of the design of tall and squat shear walls is provided, and the key parameters that affect the behaviour of such walls under various levels of vertical and lateral loading are characterised. Experimental and numerical test results found in the literature are presented with respect to the key parameters identified for both the tall and squat shear walls. The complex deformation and failure mechanisms of the squat shear walls are illuminated. Finally, recommendations are made for developing performance based design provisions as a first step towards achieving innovations in wide spaced reinforced masonry shear walls.
