- The CPT is now routinely used to provide information on the succession of layers in geological deposits and semi-continuous data on the mechanical properties of the geological materials present. Its use in profiling is usually limited to interpretations of measured data at regularly spaced, discrete points throughout the profile, with soil layers identified by grouping points with similar characteristics together. In this paper, we explore how the CPTU can beused to infer additional information from estuarine deposits, to give some indication of their geological context. It is suggested that, as an alternative to using simple linear interpolation to build a 3-dimensional geotechnical model from CPTU data, more appropriate functions can be employed to capture sediment variations in the vertical and horizontal sense. These functions are imparted to the sediment sequence by the sedimentary processes that form them in their particular depositional environment. The paper presents an example from an east coast Australian estuary to illustrate how additional information about depositional facies can be inferred from basic CPTU data. This is achieved by considering the paths that are mapped out by relative change in position of data points, with increasing depth, on the soil type classification chart. It then employs a model of estuary morphology, taken from the study of sequence stratigraphy, to show how the relative position of a suitably interpreted CPTU profile can be established in the estuary system. It concludes with a discussion of how the sediment profile, suitably located in the estuary model, can be used to predict the likely variations in conditions in adjacent areas, and ultimately improve the efficiency of geotechnical investigations and the formulation of geotechnical models.
