- Description
- The principle of effective stress established by Terzaghi in 1936 constitutes a milestone of soil mechanics. However, it does not apply to expansive soils for which electrochemical forces play a fundamental role. Several studies have shown the sensitivity of clay behaviour on bulk water chemistry, which is usually changed artificially. The preliminary results of air drying tests and consolidation tests performed on remolded expansive clay from Maryland, NSW are presented herein. It is shown that Maryland clay does not obey Terzaghi's principle without any artificial change of water chemistry. This occurs naturally though the drying of the soil, which induces an increase of cations concentration. The consequences in terms of geotechnical modeling are discussed.
