- Description
- In response to industry uncertainty around monitoring off-river gravity dam structures, this paper addresses the complexity of monitoring such systems by performing preliminary structural analysis and comparing the results to a preliminary monitoring network. The objective is to establish cost-effective groundwork that looks at the interplay between field observations and finite element (FE) modelling of gravity dam systems. By focusing on the results from FE modelling, this paper looks to provide some guidance for a future, more comprehensive structural health monitoring project at the site under investigation. The accuracy of FE models relies heavily on the quality of input data, particularly of input variables associated with failure, such as the geometric and material data at the wall-rock interface for gravity dams. Ideally, FE models are calibrated to real-world performance, a task complicated in this study by the high stiffness inherent in gravity dam systems. Even though this study found no correlation between load and deformation, leading to an uncalibrated FE model, valuable information was still gleaned from the monitoring network and uncalibrated FE model. The findings suggest a unique failure sequence initiated by a fracture of the dam’s heel, culminating in instability at the wall-rock interface. Therefore, the placement of high-resolution crack meters across the floor-wall joint is recommended for future monitoring endeavours.
