- Description
- Mining operations encompass a spectrum of activities from exploration to abandonment, which can significantly impact natural environments, leading to conflicts and transformations. This study sheds light into the dual role of the mineral industry in local communities, where it exerts both positive and negative influences. Scientific investigations across various research tiers and governmental bodies are actively engaged in assessing the industry's trajectory towards sustainable development. While employment generation stands as a positive outcome for community development, the environmental repercussions are equally significant. Displacement of locals from their ancestral lands poses a serious threat to their health and livelihoods.t This chapter scrutinizes the impacts of the mineral industry on selected continents, countries and zones, focusing on both the consequences of mining activities and the potential solutions for sustainable sector development. We present a comprehensive exploration of mining regulations from diverse perspectives within the mineral industry. Additionally, we address the implementation of effective rehabilitation and remediation plans, highlighting instances of negligence in some cases. The intricate interplay between remediation and mitigation strategies is closely examined in this chapter. The article also sheds light on native ecosystems and highlights key milestones achieved by select countries in this domain.
