- Consumer credit is always an important issue. Nevertheless, it is only when problems arise in the credit market that the general population starts to pay attention to credit issues. Credit difficulties have the potential to impact on economies as we have seen in the past, and are experiencing now with the global reverberations from the US mortgage market problems. People think that if they do not borrow then they will be immune; but this neglects the importance of consumer credit in the marketplace. To recoin an old adage: credit makes the world go round! As for the ‘debt’ part of the theme, well, lending leads to debt and debt can be a burden. Many who research and write about the issues related to debt still borrow for houses, cars, whatever. So no one is about to suggest abolishing this financial service! However, there are issues about how the market operates, how it impacts on economies, and how to help consumers avoid the many pitfalls associated with the various credit products. Thus, researchers strive to highlight factors that may help alleviate the debt burden. These articles each provide an interesting and thoughtprovoking analysis and contribute greatly to the ongoing research discussion of consumer credit and debt. Collectively they provide substantial information for consideration by policy makers in relation to consumer credit.
