- This PhD thesis aims to provide an in-depth examination of the relationship between outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) and export—and the factors that influence it— from multiple perspectives: cultural, institutional, and political. Although a substantial body of literature has focused on the relationship between OFDI and export, we demonstrate here that several important gaps remain. In particular, this research investigates the relationship between China's OFDI and trade, with a focus on export. The thesis comprises three distinct but interrelated studies. Altogether, the findings of this thesis underscore the dynamic and complex relationship between OFDI and trade. Through the utilization of a multi-dimensional lens, comprising cultural, institutional, and political distances, this research delineates a nuanced understanding of how each facet uniquely modulates the OFDI-trade nexus. Importantly, the thesis offers this analysis in a global context, contrasting the responses of emergent economies, like China, with developed Western countries such as the United States and Australia. Using the CAGE distance model as theoretical underpinning, the thesis suggests that the model can be further enriched by exploring the interplay between cultural distance and institutional distance, by taking into account the finer and more specific dimensions of cultural and institutional distance, and by introducing political distance as a component of the CAGE model, pervading it with a more dynamic perspective. The thesis provides evidence and reflection on the influence of multi-dimensional distances on OFDI-trade relations within a dynamic and context-dependent environment, rooted in the socio-economic and political fabrics of the nations involved, contributing significantly to the field of international economics and business.
