- Description
- The Social Democrat Hnchakian Party (SDHP or Hnchakian Party) was one of the first organized Armenian political parties. Established in Geneva in 1887, its founders, Avetis Nazarbekian, Maro Vardanian, Gabriel Kafian, Rupen Khan-Azad, Kristapor Ohanian and Gevorg Gharajian, were the first to adhere to the ‘scientific socialism’ of the time and try to implement this worldview among the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire. Despite being the first Armenian movement to develop a considerable grassroots organization and create a large network of underground cells inside the Ottoman Empire, the history of the SDHP has been inadequately covered by the scholarship on the social, political and economic life of the late Ottoman Armenians. The official program of the party called for a ‘broad democracy, political freedom and national independence’ for Turkish Armenia – the six Armenian provinces in eastern Anatolia known as western Armenia: Sivas, Erzurum, Mamuret-ul-Aziz, Diyarbekir, Bitlis and Van – through revolutionary action, and ‘denounced the exploitation of man by man and set socialism as the future objective of the Armenian people’.
