- Description
- The inefficient, less-sustainable, less-digitalised, and less-industrialised nature of construction industry promotes offsite construction OSC as a more industrialised, modern, and advanced construction technique. Country-based OSC adoption levels vary depending on their existing resources to upskill and strengthen the workforce and logistics. As such, it is evidenced how developed and developing countries face vast differences based on the exogenous influence into OSC processes. This research aims to evaluate the economic and environmental feasibility of OSC using a comprehensive literature review to compare OSC adoptions in developed and developing nations, focusing on North America, Europe, MENA, Asia, and Oceania. Based on the literature findings, the study evaluates economic and environmental feasibility of OSC in Sri Lanka, which represents a case study for the Asian region. A qualitative research approach was adopted that includes semi-structured interviews and documentary reviews to collect data followed by content analysis. It was evident that OSC is a feasible option for Sri Lanka in economic and environmental perspectives. The research contributes to knowledge by comparing OSC adoptions in different countries and how its effects are being penetrated to developing nations. While the research possesses inherent limitations of a qualitative study, it also provides a comparative case study analysis on economic and environmental feasibility of OSC applicable to Sri Lanka, which can be a catalyst for future research in similar developing nations.
