- We read with interest the article in the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology by Sverdlichenko etal, which described a case controlled study looking at anemia and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). They found that there was an overall increase in the incidence of anemia in IIH compared with controls of 22.8% vs 10.6% (P = 0.1), respectively. They acknowledged that IIH is related to an elevation in the venous outflow pressure of the brain. They posit that the role of anemia in the causation of IIH could be due to hypercoagulability of the blood causing small venous emboli, hyperviscosity of the blood increasing venous pressure, and also suggested a theoretical correlation between an elevation in cerebral blood flow and vasodilatation. We wish to discuss this later possibility in light of our own findings.
