- Matrix converter (MC) is a compact and power efficient replacement of the traditional two-stage AC/AC power conversion. A known challenge to the MC control is the presence of the supply-side voltage distortion, causing distortions in both supply-side and load-side currents. This paper proposes a novel observer-based control scheme with active compensation of the supply side harmonics, along with input power factor control, resonance suppression in the input filter and high quality reference tracking of the load side current. The paper compares, by simulation, the proposed control scheme with the traditional MC control, and shows similar performance at the load side and significant performance improvements at the MC supply side.
