- As 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Club of Rome’s landmark report ‘The Limits to Growth’ (Meadows et al., Citation1972), it is timely to discuss the merits of degrowth. Recently published research by Hickel et al. (Citation2022) in the Lancet Planetary Health reported on a ‘fair shares assessment’ that found: ‘ … high-income nations bear the overwhelming responsibility for global ecological breakdown, and therefore owe an ecological debt to the rest of the world … which will likely require transformative post-growth and degrowth approaches (pp. e347–e348).
