- Description
- The study of late antique Platonist views on the Timaeus’ khôra, and hence on matter, is greatly hindered by the lack of any surviving Greek commentary on the relevant part of the work (47e‑53c). We do have an extensive treatment of the passage in Calcidius’ commentary 1, but that is almost entirely dependent on material traceable to so‑called Middle Platonism—Platonism before the time of Plotinus. This means that the views of those we call Neoplatonists are nowhere treated in the kind of methodical detail that we take for granted regarding (e.g.) 27c‑44d. This is simply due to the loss of whatever Proclus wrote on the Timaeus beyond the point where his running commentary today concludes 2 . In losing Proclus, we also lose his precious, and often extensive, reports of a commentary tradition going back to Middle Platonist times, in most cases because other running commentaries, including that of Porphyry 3, had ceased at or before this point.
