Description: Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the most common air-ways diseases, both affecting 5% to 15% of the population in developed countries. 1,2. With such high prevalence, the 2 conditions are bound to coexist in some individuals. The association of the 2 diseases has been recognized for decades but only recently received a proper designation: the asthma–COPD overlap (ACO). There is a growing interest in ACO among the medical community and although its components benefit from widely accepted definitions, the exact definition of ACO has yet to be agreed upon. Several attempts to define ACO have been made but have not been based on evidence or proper validation. Nevertheless, a proper definition of ACO is of paramount importance for clinicians and researchers.
