- A pilot focus group study evaluating the perception of female community pharmacists reganding their ability to counsel patients with erectile dysfunction and other male sexual disorders was conducted. A total of 1O pharmacists participated in the two focus groups, with seven and three participants for the first and second discussion group respectively. The mean year of practicing experience of the participants was 20 years with a range from 1 to 84 years. The results from the focus group discusston showed that generally the pharmacists were confident about counselling male patients regarding sexual dysfunction and the level of confidence increased with increased years of professional community pharmacy practice. The participants also aknowledged that the provision of continuous education regarding pathophysiology of male sexual dysfunction would be contributive to improving their counselling skills. Nevertheless, most participants agreed that there exists an image problem especially when the female pharmacists were young and this would need concerted effort from the profession to rectify. Finally, the suggestion for designated private area for conducting patient counselling again raised the issue of reimbursement for provision of cognitive services by pharmacists due to the opportunity cost involved.
