Description: In early childhood research, over the past decade or more, there has been a rethinking of the way we examine the lives of young children. There has been a critique of research on or about children, and a movement toward researching with or.for children (Christensen and James 2.00 8; Christensen and Prout 2.002.; Mayall 2.002.; Punch 2.002.). Researchers have deliberated over improving methods of including children, by offering them a participatory role, by addressing the issue of power imbalances and by considering the importance of rapport building with child participants (Gallacher and Gallagher 2.008; O'Kane 2.008; Sumsion 2.003). Including children's voices in research, and recognizing their subjective agency, reflects a wider acknowledgement of children's rights produced in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNICEF 1989) and the sociology of childhood (James and Prout 1997).
