- Pregnancy is a state in which one or more fertilized eggs is retained within the uterus and provisioned with oxygen and nutrients for the specific amount of time required to complete the embryonic/fetal development program. Pregnancy ends by the process of parturition, whereby the products of conception (i.e., the embryo/fetus and extra-embryonic tissues) are expelled from the uterus. Hormone signaling networks control pregnancy and parturition by: Creating a suitable intrauterine environment to enable attachment and implantation of the embryo. • Signaling the presence of a viable embryo to sustain a propregnancy uterine phenotype and maternal physiology. • Controlling implantation of the embryo into the uterine wall and the formation of a placenta. • Modulating maternal physiology to supply oxygen and nutrients to the conceptus. • Blocking the process of parturition and physically accommodating the conceptus for a gestational period needed for fetal growth and maturation. • Triggering parturition at a time when the fetus is sufficiently mature to survive as a neonate. • Establishing maternal lactation and behaviors required to protect and nurture the newborn. The hormones of pregnancy include multiple proteins, lipids, and steroids acting in endocrine and/or paracrine modes. This chapter will focus on key hormonal signals that control and coordinate the establishment and maintenance of human pregnancy and the timing and process of parturition.
