- Droplets are often encountered in industrial applications such as emulsions, biomedical diagnostics, drug encapsulation, crystallization, materials synthesis, chemical mixing and reaction. A significant body of work has been devoted to the study of the underlying mechanisms that drive and govern the droplet formation. However, it has been identified that there is little known about how lowering temperature down to below the freezing point of water droplets (i.e., 0oC) could affect the droplet formation, specifically the liquid jet instabilities and breakup dynamics. In this study, the formation of water droplets in a cold co-flowing liquid (i.e., carrier fluid) has been investigated. The water droplets were generated under high pressure through a cylindrical spray nozzle with an inner diameter of 0.4 mm in a large column with an inner diameter of 40 mm. The temperature of the carrier fluid was varied from room temperature down to -10oC. Effects of carrier fluid temperature on the dynamics of droplet formation have been analysed. The results showed that the carrier fluid temperature significantly affected the process of droplet formation. Contrary to the findings of droplet detachment in microfluidic X-Junction, both the mean droplet size and the mean liquid jet length increased as the carrier fluid temperature decreased. The different mechanisms governing the droplet formation process were thought to be the main reason leading to the different dependency relationship between droplet size and the temperature
