- In the present study, a three-dimensional interface resolved computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is presented to investigate the characteristics of flow field of a cavity channel flow system in the absence and presence of a single bubble (Db ~ 2 mm). The simulations were carried out for a range of liquid Reynolds numbers (Re) from 5000 to 40000. The results showed the presence of a confined vortex inside the cavity. When a bubble was injected in this cavity, two outcomes were noted – complete entrapment of bubble in the vortex and bubble escaping from the vortex. A critical liquid Reynolds number (Re ~ 6000) was obtained above which the bubble was noted to remain trapped inside the cavity due to large centripetal force compared to the buoyancy force acting on bubble. Below this threshold, bubble was observed to escape the cavity. The predicted bubble trajectory inside the cavity agreed well with the experimental observations. Additionally, it was noted that bubble had an insignificant contribution to the flow field at higher Re, however, the opposite effect was observed at the low Re case.
