- Description
- Summary: Considerable research attention has been given in the past to both the short and longer-term corrosion performance of structural mild steels in open unprotected exposure conditions. However, the available information for the corrosion of mild steel exposed to seawater in enclosed, near-stagnant exposure conditions is limited. The present study reports data for corrosion loss of mild steel vertical strips exposed for 12 and 30 months within uPVC tubes and in near-stagnant tidal seawater conditions. These data are likely relevant for predicting corrosion losses inside windmill pylons used extensively in the offshore renewable energy industry. Estimation of the likely corrosion is of interest since field inspection is problematic owing to difficulties of access. The results show that the although the strips are subject to immersion tidal and splash zone corrosion there is no obvious accelerated low water corrosion effect and that after some 12 months exposure most corrosion occurs in the upper tidal zone and is significantly more severe when the local seawater has elevated concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, indicating the involvement of microbiologically influenced corrosion. The likely practical implications of the present findings are discussed briefly.
