- Description
- Voldu is an artificial auxiliary language created by Josef Stadelmann. It is based on English, but, unlike English, it has affixes for three cases, the genitive, dative, and accusative, attached to nouns. However, the genitive and dative can also be marked by the prepositions of and tu respectively. This paper will investigate factors which play a role in the choice of affixal vs. prepositional genitives and datives in Voldu. Some guidance on this is given in Stadelmann (1945), the only book on this language; on p. 32 he says "We should prefer the genitive with s as Possessive genitive … [and] Subjective genitive", while of is to be used to mark the objective genitive (e.g. Luvo of gold 'the love of money') and the partitive genitive (e.g. Glas of milk 'a glass of milk'). However, there seems to be a more free choice with respect to the dative; with regard to it, and with regard to the genitive, I will look at the very limited textual material available in Voldu to try to determine whether there are any discernible patterns in the choice of type of marker. Some of these texts are "exercises", and in many, but not all, cases, both possibilities are given, but this is not always the case. For example, for the equivalent of 'Tell Miller!', there is only the prepositional version, Dir tu Miller!, which perhaps is due to the fact that a proper noun, in particular a surname, is involved. This paper will only deal with the genitive and dative of nouns, not those of pronouns.
