- Description
- Globally, the rise in accident rates in the construction industry has prompted an increasing number of studies in the last two decades, suggesting that understanding safety behaviour (SB) is a significant element of successful construction safety management. This paper presents a systematic review of the literature on predictors of SB published in academic journals from 1978 to 2017. Following the review of 38 empirical studies, 100 predictors were identified. The most common SB predictors were management commitment, safety communication, workers involvement, safety knowledge, and safety and health training. It was found that the US, Australia, and China were the most influential countries in SB predictors research. Additionally, surveys and inferential statistics were the frequently used methods in assessing SB predictors. Developing countries such as China, Thailand, India, and Iran also made good attempts to champion SB research. It is expected that this study would enhance the understanding of SB predictors for industrial practitioners, academics, and policymakers and assist with the promotion of SB in construction. The developed checklist of SB predictors may also be useful for further empirical studies as well as future studies on fostering employee safety during the construction stage of smart buildings. Finally, four main research gaps are identified for further studies.
