- Description
- One key goal of the seventeen sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations refers to the importance of networking interactions between local, national, and international partners in all sectors to implement SDGs. Tourism is one of sectors that can contribute to achievement of these goals, but research exploring the ways in which tourism networks operate to implement these goals remains scarce. This paper reports on a qualitative study focused on tourism development in Da Nang city, in Vietnam. The research employs a case study methodology to examine how tourism networks can contribute to the achievement of SDGs, based on the concept of tourismscapes from actor-network theory (ANT). Drawn on data from eight in-depth interviews with tourism stakeholders in Da Nang, document analysis, and on-site observations, the initial findings of this case study reveal that the principal actor of the tourism network is both the leader of the city tourism association and a local tourism business. Within the network, non-human actors were exposed as motivations, catalysts, and connecting factors between human actors. This case study illustrates the significant role that a local tourism business can play in connecting and bringing together multisectors in a network to work together for sustainable development; in this case, protection and preservation of the natural environment. Drawing on the concept of 'tourismscapes' that emerges from ANT, this paper contributes a practical example of a Tourism Actor Network and its connectivity in the context of tourism development in Da Nang.
