- Description
- Semi Interlocking Masonry (SIM) is an innovative masonry system where bricks are not bonded by mortar into a stiff monolithic panel but remain unbonded interlocked segments. The main purpose of this system is to enhance the seismic performance of framed structures with masonry infill panels. In this system, SIM panels dissipate earthquake energy through the friction on sliding joints between courses of segmented units. A number of testing programs have been carried out to evaluate the out-of-plane load and displacement capacities of SIM panels. The main objective of this study is to develop a FE model of a SIM panel and to simulate numerically its out-of-plane deflection under a lateral load. This paper presents the results of numerical FE simulation using DIANA software, calibrated against experimental results. A SIM panel made of topologically interlocking bricks was selected for this study. The panel was 1980x2025 mm (length x height respectively) and 110 mm thick. Close correlation was achieved between numerical and experimental results.
