- Corrosion of masonry wall ties has been a topic of much debate since their failure inevitably leads to complete loss of strength and stability of cavity brick and brick-veneer masonry walls. This is especially of concern within Australia as most decades old low and medium rise residential and commercial buildings were constructed with plain, galvanised, steel wire ties. Consequences of corrosion related failure include full high-rise façade collapse onto ongoing pedestrians and or traffic. Yet, little to only anecdotally reported results are available for phenomenological modelling purposes or decision making. This paper reports on heritage listed field investigation as well as salt spray accelerated tests for Australian standardised light, medium and heavy duty classes of wall ties. Results are compared and implications towards predicting potential long-term remaining wall tie structural capacity are discussed.
