- Description
- In Chapter 1, Dalton and Perkins examine the diverse Australian rural context and the epidemiology of rural mental health, paying particular attention to the social and emotional well being of Aboriginal Australians. Through this lens, the chapter introduces us to a key theme in global rural mental health – that of interactions with the land, landscape, and environment. Rural Australia encompasses a broad range of distinctive communities, with attendant environmental, economic, and social challenges of drought, flood, and fire. Tensions in land and water use between and within industries and communities contribute to particular stressors for rural dwellers. This introduces us to the notion of contextually appropriate mental health services.
