Description: The importance of the lived, performed, felt and experienced modes of place and community made available through the festival means acknowledging the ways in which a festival can engage us within networks of emotion and affect that can heighten feelings of belonging or exclusion. A ‘successful’ festival in terms of social connectedness is one that brings about a feeling of togetherness, a collective joy that transforms individuals into a community. Yet, festivals also offer opportunities for developing new networks or revitalising existing ones via social capital. Drawing on research carried out in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, this chapter focuses on identifying the networks and ties between a range of actors and stakeholders in the community in the context of the Dungog Arts Festival.
