- Description
- The term linguistic landscapes refers to concrete manifestations of language in a place, for example, road signs in a particular language. The study of linguistic landscapes can give information about sociolinguistic situations, including attitudes toward languages. Edirne is an interesting location from this point of view for several reasons: on the one hand it is not a large city like Istanbul, where one might expect various languages in the linguistic landscape to cater to visitors from many countries, but on the other hand it is within easy reach of Greece and Bulgaria, and so it is not surprising that Greek and Bulgarian occur in its linguistic landscape. In fact, several years ago Edirne’s mayor was criticized because of posters in Greek put up in the city, apparently not because they were in Greek, but because they used the Greek name for the city. This is an indication of what strong sentiments items in a linguistic landscape can arouse. This paper will investigate the linguistic landscape of Edirne, by looking at various signs. Although one can find signs in languages other than Turkish and bilingual or multilingual signs (e.g. the entrance to the Edirne Ulus Pazarı says in Turkish, English, Greek, and Bulgarian that it is open “Every Friday”), there are also still many signs which are only in Turkish. This research will be a contribution to research on the linguistic landscapes of smaller cities.
