Description: The aim of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report, 'A picture of Australia's children', is to paint a broad picture of the health and development of Australian children. This article summarises the key findings of the report and discusses its implications. The article expresses concern about the apparent gaps in information that are revealed through the report's attempts to provide such a broad coverage of child health. It suggests ways of filling these gaps, particularly in the area of the non communicable illnesses of childhood such as obesity and mental disorders, and underlines the importance of reliable data to inform health and social policy decisions.
