- Waste management is a global, pressing issue. In 2019, the United Nations identified waste management as a global concern that is fundamental to achieving sustainable development.' The Sixth Global Environment Outlook suggested several strategies, which include the following variations of upcycling or recycling: refuse, rethink, reduce, reuse, repair, refurbish, remanufacture, and repurpose.2
