- Little research explores the subjective interpretations of facilitators of Men’s Behaviour Change (MBC) programs, group-based intervention programs for perpetrators of domestic violence. One in three women worldwide will have experienced violence in their lifetime with the majority perpetrated by an intimate partner leading to longstanding physical and psychological health issues. This phenomenological study explored the positive and negative ‘lived’ experience of facilitators of MBC programs using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to guide data collection and analysis. One superordinate theme: Patriarchy, transgenerational trauma and passion for change overarched four subordinate themes: 1) The tightrope of empathy and accountability; 2) Enveloped and enmeshed: The person and the practitioner; 3) Systemic Brutality and Sabotage; and 4) Vicariously exposed but not traumatised. The themes reflect the complexity of these participants’ role, their perceived multiple systemic and intergenerational layers of domestic violence, and their passion for contributing to societal change. As facilitators, their specialised skill set navigated historical patriarchal beliefs and values, intergenerational violence, and marginalisation, mirroring the dynamics of domestic violence. Through an unavoidable lens, participants described a constant state of vigilance to male privilege and coercive control, which are less visible but equally important forms of domestic violence. Co-facilitation brought complex dynamics for modelling an equal partnership. Despite vicarious exposure to domestic violence and the imposing nature of a “DV lens”, participants expressed a passionate commitment to individual growth and societal change. Men’s Behaviour Change programs offer opportunities to confront the societal curse of domestic violence by consciously acknowledging the power of systemic patriarchy to disempower and destabilise all members of society.
