Description: High rating television programmes in the last few years have focused public attention on the possibilities which image processing can bring to court. Fictional television programmes continually present white-coated technicians assisting forensic scientists with a bewildering array of high resolution computer-based tools which reveal otherwise hidden details in images. Unfortunately real life for forensic photogrammetrists is more mundane, and time consuming, than television would portray. The examples in this chapter will illustrate that the consultant photogrammetrist may only be an "after-thought" in an investigation and must work with images which are sub-optimal, opportunistic and not taken with any prior knowledge of photogrammetric principles. An ability to work creatively with limited images and in conjunction with other surveying tools could aptly describe the job description. In brief, the forensic photogrammetrist's role can be very challenging.
