- Interest in research and practice on humanitarian logistics, humanitarian operations and humanitarian supply chains has grown in importance and quantity in recent years. Nonetheless, attention to, and use of applicable theories and theoretical lenses in research on humanitarian logistics seems limited (Richey Jr 2009, p.619). One strategy for cultivating a deeper scholarly understanding of a concept such as humanitarian logistics is to examine the implications of a key theory for the concept as doing so allows scholars a greater depth of understanding. Hence, this chapter advocates 4 social science and management theories as worthy of consideration by humanitarian logistics scholars and practitioners. The chapter further demonstrates how each of the theories can be deployed in research. The overarching goal of this chapter is to generate and stimulate novel research ideas through analysis of each of the 4 suggested theories, and set the stage for future theoretically rigorous investigations of the practice of humanitarian logistics.
